AMSA Movember Mo-Mentor Month

What is Movember?

During the month of Movember (sometimes known as November), you may notice that people sport moustaches loudly, proudly, and at a much higher rate than is normal for 2008. There is a reason - it's time to raise awareness about men's health in the manliest way possible.

Movember is an official charity whose benefactors include the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia and Beyondblue: The National Depression Initiative. If you register at the Movember website you can raise money for these charities, to help research and treatment of the diseases that affect men around Australia.

If you don't have any money and all of your friends are broke, fear not! You can still get involved. Many of the diseases that affect men are easily treatable and preventable provided they are detected early. So grow a mo, and when you are asked, "What the hell is that on your face?", you can tell them about Movember and the importance of being aware of the warning signs and screening tools for men's health issues like depression, prostate cancer and testicular cancer. As a medical student you should know about these problems but if you need to revise have a look here.

AMSA Movember Mo-mentor competition

AMSA has decided to throw it's support behind Movember and is encouraging as many of you as possible to participate. As part of this, if you are currently involved in the AMSA National Mentoring Scheme, or register now for a mentoring group for next year, then you can get involved in the AMSA Mo-mentor competition to win prizes. Register for the National mentoring scheme via e-mail mentoring@amsa.org.au.

For the Guys (Mo-Bros)
  1. Sign up for the AMSA National Mentoring Scheme here now.
  2. Find your own celebrity Mo-mentor. See some examples below.
  3. Grow your mo to look as close as possible to your Mo-Mentor's as a sign of respect.
  4. When the month is through, send a photo of yourself with your hairy upper lip and your mo-mentor to mentoring@amsa.org.au, by December 4 to be in the running for some great prizes.

For the Girls (Mo-Sistas)
  1. Sign up for the AMSA National Mentoring Scheme here now.
  2. You can participate in the boy's competition if desired but, if you are hormonally challenged, you needn't. First things first though, find a Mo-Mentor.
  3. Emulate them using a prosthetic mo (Nikko pen, lint, bear trimmings). As no actual hair is being grown, full costume in support of your Mo-mentor is encouraged. As an example consider dressing in cricket gear, with a massive moustache to idolise your mentor, Merv Huges.
  4. Send a photo of yourself and your mo-mentor to mentoring@amsa.org.au, by December 4 to be in the running for some great prizes.
