Afternoon naps. Is there anything better? I've just woken from one and in this post-nap splendor, everything seems particularly splendid. AMSA Council is about to convene for three heady days of policy-making, debate, and dumpling. Convention and GHC are ready to launch - all that's needed now is a bunch of enthusiastic, costumed students. Today marks the end of the financial year. Indeed, it's a great time to be alive, and to be a part of AMSA. If you haven't already, sign up to Life in the Real World and/or the National Leadership Development Seminar then put your fun-times pants on in preparation. Now. To find myself a Spaniard named Pablo who will take me as his wife and we'll move to a place where siestas are compulsory and a donkey will carry me on its back so I don't have to use public transport. -SeaFox

Competitions

Last Month's Winners

Congratulations to the winner of the May '08 Guitar Hero alternatives competition, Jeremy Smith. He suggested "Pants Hero". In this game, the individual must select the pair of pants most appropriate to the given occasion, whether it be trousers for trout fishing or slacks to woo a lady.

Congratulations also to the winner of the Free Stuff for Free Competition - the correct answer was "600" (new John Flynn Scholarships announced, increasing the total number offered to 1,200).

Med Revue Season
is Upon Us!

Well, it's my favourite season of the year. Duck hunting season. Which occurs at the same time as Med Revue season. This month, we'd like to test your powers of comedy. Send us your best medical parody of a movie title (for example, The Darling Breast Buds of May, a stunning drama depicting one girl's journey through Tanner stage II) and we'll send you whatever prizes we happen to have lying around AMSA HQ. Send your entries to embolus@amsa.org.au.

Free Stuff in Exchange
for an Email

Once again, we're giving you the chance to win textbooks. It's a matter of reading the next two sentences, maybe two more after that, and then sending us an email - easier than cannulating a garden hose. So. AMSA recently made a submission to the National Health and Hospitals Reform Commission. What is one of the ways that we propose to improve the provision of health services in rural areas? Here's a hint. Send your entries to embolus@amsa.org.au

AMSA Launches AMWSS
The Australian Medical Workforce Scholarship Scheme (AMWSS) is a proposed alternative to the Bonded Medical Places program and HECS reimbursement scheme. AMSA has been opposed to Bonded Medical Places since their inception, due to the lack of support and incentives offered to students. Similarly, the HECS reimbursement scheme, whilst being worthwhile, has received a poor response from students. The AMWSS proposal details how we might combine money from the HECS Reimbursement Scheme with the Bonded Places to provide HECS relief and a living allowance to students. We have delivered this proposal to Government and the Opposition for comment and further discussion. You can view the proposal here.

10-Year Moratorium: Changes Underway

AMSA is preparing a proposal to change the 10 year moratorium on Medicare provider numbers that applies to international students who are trained domestically. Many international students who are trained in Australia, are discouraged from continuing to practice here because of 10 year moratorium. Our proposal will centre on allowing the ten year moratorium begin from the time that students commence medical school - hence recognising the time these students commit to training in Australia. If you wish to contribute to the drafting of this proposal, please contact the Vice President External on vpe@amsa.org.au.

AMSA Blood Drive: Keep Bleeding
The AMSA Blood Drive runs but for one month a year - that month is nearly here. The Blood Drive will be launched at Convention in Melbourne next week and run until the end of August. By donating blood, medical students help their medsocs compete for the coveted Vampire Cup AND save lives without even having to turn up to university. It looks like everyone's a winner. When the Blood Drive launches at Convention, you will be able to access the online form to log your donation and help steer your university to victory.

National Charity Drive - AMSA, Altruism & You
The AMSA National Charity Drive runs from July to July each year. We would like to invite medical societies to submit details of charity events they have undertaken in the past year, as part of AMSA's National Charity Drive. AMSA Council will vote on the most innovative and successful initiative for '07-'08 in July and the winning Med Soc is awarded the coveted AMSA Charity Cup at AMSA Convention. Email details of your charity event to nc@amsa.org.au. For more information on how to submit details of your event, go here.

Melbourne08 - So Few Sleeps Away I Might Just Stay Awake

As I write this, there are but five sleeps until Convention. As you read this, there will be fewer. Regardless, the excitement here in Melbourne is palpable. A mission to Lincraft in the city today was telling - as I smugly placed my body glitter, body paint and lycra selections on the counter, the assistant looked at me through squinty, suspicious eyes and said, "You're a MEDICAL STUDENT". I nodded (smugly), thinking that no Melbourne citizen was immune to Convention fever, no Lincraft assistant able to escape the promotional genius of the Melbourne08 promotions team. Then I realised I was wearing my hospital ID. Regardless, it's nearly here and we're excited. Remind yourselves of how good it's going to be here.

AMSA Launches Inaugural Training New Trainers Program

Perks 'R Us

Being subscribed to AMSA brings many benefits, the most valuable of which is (arguably) this e-newsletter arriving in your inbox each month. There are myriad other benefits available to you, neatly summarised in the new-look Member Benefits section of our website. We are constantly updating this section, so keep checking back regularly.

Panacea 2: The Readying

History is full of great sequels: Jaws II, The Nutty Professor II: The Klumps... World War II. So we here at AMSA said to ourselves "Say, it went so well for the Germans - we can't help but enjoy the same unbridled success!"1. Which leads us to Panacea II and the hope that, now that you've seen the kind of pap the editor was forced to produce as filler in the first instalment, your festering rage can be channelled into something productive.

Write to us: tell us a story, compose an anthology of poetry devoted to pessaries or send an inappropriate Letter to the Editor asking for assistance with your love life. We're not fussy. But we do want more stuff from YOU, dear reader - get it out there by sending it to publications@amsa.org.au and look forward to seeing your name in print next to such literary luminaries as that made-up guy from Oxford.

1It's probably safe to assume that the collective knowledge of the Great Wars held at AMSA HQ derives from reruns of Hogan's Heroes and Dad's Army.

IRG08 Debuts

The 2008 Intern and Resident Guide (IRG) is now available to download from the AMSA website. The IRG, one of AMSA's mostly eagerly anticipated publications, details the salary, employment and lifestyle conditions at every Australian hospital which accepts interns. The IRG is also being produced in hard copy and will be distributed via AMSA Representatives shortly.

Liz Hayem: The Future of Convention & UQ AMSA Rep

Why are you doing medicine? Oh well, you know. I want to be a super healer. After all... who doesn't? I want to look after every single aspect of patient care. I've done the science, and the nursing. Now medicine. Hmmm.... maybe I'll dabble in the art of being a physio next, then master speech pathology, then public health, then the world...

The most useful general medicine textbook is... people still use textbooks?

A-M-S-A stands for... Adept Medical Student Actors.

Mac vs PC? Depends on my mood. Sometimes i use my mac, sometimes my PC.

What do you hope to get out of Convention '08? I'm hoping to get out of there alive.

Can you give us a teaser of what's to come at Convention '09? I don't like to tease people. That is just mean. But it will set new standards for the next fifty years of conventions...

What did you learn today? That I like wearing berets.
