Oh, hello everyone. You know, Halloween is a very strange holiday - children worshipping bats, a constant non-critical-level threat of vortexes, teenagers drinking strange new types of Lager in underground bars, perfectly good eating-pumpkins carved into perfectly good Jack-o'-Lanterns that are wasted on account of daylight savings. Costumery-based holidays aside, it's been a huge month for AMSA. Council convened for the last time in 2008. We hit the news in a big way over the issue of intern training capacity. The Blood Drive results were ANnoUnced (see what I did there?), as was the team who will lead AMSA in 2009. And so, as the sands of time dribble onto the carpet, and we career towards end-of-year exams and tinsel-based holidays, stop, for a moment. For the next 30-ish short-to-medium-length paragraphs, you're in our hands. But we'd like to think of you as in our arms too. Embraced in a warm, bosomy, warm, bosomy, delicious AMSA embrace. 'Til next time. -Carly

Intern Training Campaign

AMSA's intern training capacity campaign is about ensuring the availability and quality of education you receive in your first year after graduation. Many students have expressed concern regarding the availability of internship places as student numbers increase, so AMSA is extracting guarantees from all the states and territories regarding the provision of internships. This is an issue that affects you directly. We invite you to take part in this campaign by clicking here.

Early Streaming Policy

The pressure to produce more medical specialists in response to an Australia-wide doctor shortage has led to fast tracking of trainees into specialty training. AMSA believes that this may compromise the quality of the trainees' generalist education, that is, the acquisition of broad-based medical skills and knowledge that underpin the entirety of an individual's medical career. To this end, Council endorsed this policy on Early Streaming. We appreciate your feedback to embolus@amsa.org.au.

Shared Clinical Placements Policy

With the increase in medical schools around the country, students on rotations have begun to share clinical sites. Sharing sites can help to maximise the available clinical training resources, however sharing needs to be entered into carefully to ensure that students receive the highest quality education and that sharing is not a cause of conflict. AMSA has developed this policy on shared clinical placements. We appreciate your feedback to embolus@amsa.org.au, especially if you are currently, or have previously been, at a shared clinical site.

19 Years Since Berlin Wall Fell

Yes, that's right Australian Medical Students, the Berlin Wall was torn down on the night of 9th November 1989. This historic event paved the way for a divided Germany to become, like, friends again. And let us not underestimate the importance and influence of 'the Hoff' who still claims to have started the tearing down process on that fateful night - heaven bless 'im.

Letter from the Editor of Panacea

Dear everyone

Due to circumstances beyond my control (a malfunctioning external hard drive and, probably more importantly, the lack of an IQ commensurate with executive functioning), the October edition of Panacea has hit a major stumbling block and will not be delivered to universities until November.

I understand your pain, friends. I do. I also understand that some of you will have completed your university attendance by this stage and may be feeling a vice-like sensation in the chest as you contemplate the ensuing months without this publication. The best cure for your impending feeling of doom and chest pain radiating down your left arm? Subscribe to AMSA!1 By subscribing to AMSA you are assured of never missing a Panacea again as it gets delivered right into the gaping maw of your mailbox - and all for FREE. Subscribe today and feel the pain melt away.

1Actual cure may differ. Actual cure may involve nitrates and urgent referral to coronary angiography. Please seek medical advice urgently if the described symptoms are happening to you.

A Frighteningly Special Edition Special Report

October Council brings with it the air of change, because someone usually brings a special fan that blows in our faces to remind us to change. Also because it's the time when Council votes in the new Executive. We are pleased to introduce you to Team NSW, who will be taking the reins of the AMSA Executive in 2009.

The relationship began eight months ago. Things started slowly at first, but with each meeting we grew closer. Our free time was but an endless phone call, continued over dinner, and into the night until dawn peeked over the horizon and begrudgingly, we gave in to fatigue, for just an hour or two. We became ever more committed, planning carefully for our future together. We faced seemingly insurmountable challenges but in the end, our love prevailed. And now, so many months later, we stand before you, all 12,800 Australian Medical Students, as the 2009 AMSA executive, to declare our undying devotion to AMSA.

We, a group of passionate New South Wales medical students were united by a dream - that dream was AMSA. Though our backgrounds were diverse - undergraduate, graduate, metropolitan and rural - we shared the same goal, to connect, inform and represent each and every Australian Medical Student. We spent long nights locked in cramped meeting rooms, with naught but an extra large pack of Tim Tams and pure, unadulterated passion for the cause to sustain us. In doing so, we went from complete strangers to great friends. We came to understand one another's strengths and weaknesses and were able to appreciate the diversity and skill within our group. This allowed us determine the right candidate for each position, and resulted in the formation of a strong and experienced team.

As a team, we plan to embark on new initiatives that will strengthen AMSA in 2009. We will also consolidate past achievements, in order to establish a long-term vision for AMSA. Importantly, we will engage our members through the introduction of a Membership Officer who will be responsible for expanding and refining member benefits and services. Improved communication will allow us to represent each and every student more effectively, particularly our international student membership. We have also identified rural and indigenous health as an area of priority this year.

With such goals to look forward to next year, we are all keen to get some AMSA action. As the 2009 AMSA executive we are ready to stand before a congregation of all Australian medical students and declare that "we do."

The team members are; Tiff Fulde (President), Cam Korb-Wells (VP-Internal), Jamie Alexander (VP-External), Geoff Collins (Treasurer), Helen Freeborn (NC), Jeff Anh and Jon Noonan (Sponsorship & Marketing), Elise Coker (PRO), Chris Mulligan (Membership), Shannon Nott (RIO), Kieran Owens (GHO), Sally Holden (Publications), Genevieve Peek (Community Liaison) and Yogeesan Sivakumaran (ICO). We wish you guys all the best in 2009! -Ed
