What is AMSA Gender Equity?

AMSA holds gender equity as one of its core pillars and recognises the impact that gender inequity has on health outcomes, and on the lives of its student members. The Gender Equity project was developed to address broad gender inequity issues in Medicine generally and in medical leadership more specifically. Since its inception, AMSA Gender Equity has analysed the prevalence of education on bullying and sexual harassment in universities nationally and proactively measured gendered representation in AMSA. 2017 also saw the launch of the inaugural Women in Leadership mentoring program which has since paired over ninety junior female medical students with female student leaders.

Application Process

Please submit two documents to our National Projects Coordinator, Alice Aitkenhead (, a one page resume and a 750 word application which includes answers to the following:

  1. Why is working towards Gender Equity in medicine important to you?

  2. What would you like to achieve as the Gender Equity Coordinator? How would you do this?

  3. What experience and passion do you have for leadership and working in a team?

  4. What relevant experience do you have in creating the building blocks for a sustainable initiative/project?

  5. What specific experience do you have in dealing with gender equity and the issues which surround it? How do you see this experience translating into skills which will help you run this project?

Primary Tasks

    Oversee the strategic direction and development of the AMSA Gender Equity Portfolio

Overall Goals for 2018

Work closely with the Projects Officer to coordinate targeted development activities to support female and non-binary medical students


To manage and oversee the Gender Equity Portfolio

To continue the Women in Leadership Mentoring Program

To continue to develop the Gender Equity Project and implement new initiatives

To remain up-to-date and well-informed on Gender Equity issues, as an advisor to the Advocacy team

Establish internal documents and handover protocols to ensure the operational sustainability of AMSA Gender Equity in the future

Day-to-day tasks


Liaise with Projects Officer and A-Team

Time commitment

5-15 hours/week

Term of appointment will be 1 year from your induction


Organisational skills and year-long planning

Ability to engage and empower people at a grassroots level

Excellent communication skills to coordinate an effective project nationwide
