Legal Basics

AMSA is a public company limited by guarantee.

Essentially, the AMSA Executive become the Directors of the company.

The Members of the company are the AMSA Representatives from each Medical School.

Executive

The AMSA Executive is elected annually by the AMSA Representatives from each Medical School at Third Council. For more information on how the Executive is elected, please click here.

The Executive maintains the day-to-day operations of the Association. It provides leadership and strategic direction, develops and implements services, and represents and lobbies for students.

The office of the Executive shifts between cities as per the origins of the team.

Presently the Executive consists of the following officers: President, Vice-President External, Vice-President Internal, Treasurer, National Co-ordinator, two Sponsorship Officers, Public Relations Officer, Membership Officer, Community and Promotions Officer, Rural and Indigenous, Global Health, Publications and an Internal Communications Officer. Please find the contact details for the Executive here.

The Executive is supported by the AMSA Secretariat.

AMSA Representatives and Council

The AMSA Council is made up of an AMSA Representative from each Medical School. The Executive and MedSoc Presidents also attend. Council is the chief decision-making body of the Association and most official AMSA policies and resolutions are ratified by this body.

Council convenes three times per year and generally lasts for three days: usually First Council is in February, Second Council in July and Third Council in October. First and Third Councils take place in the home city of the Executive; the July Council occurs on the weekend prior to the National Convention in the respective city.

Each AMSA Representative (Rep) is elected by their respective MedSoc as part of its internal election process.

AMSA Reps have the important role of acting as a conduit between AMSA and local medical students. Through their local AMSA Subcommittees, they bring the concerns, issues and opinions of medical students at their University to AMSA Council and the Executive. AMSA Reps also promote AMSA at the local level.

AMSA Committees

AMSA Committees report directly to the AMSA Council.

Committees are responsible for directly administering aspects of the broader AMSA operation.

Committees are headed by a Chairperson and operate the:

AMSA National Convention (Chair: Convention Convenor)

  • AMSA Global Health Conference (Chair: GHC Convenor)
  • AMSA Global Health Network (Chair: AMSA GHN Chair)
  • AMSA International Students Network (Chair: Vice-President External)
  • AMSA Specialty Interest Networks (Chair: to be advised)

Other Committees arise from time to time to develop, manage and implement AMSa Events and programmes. For example, in 2007 a Committee was established to organise the March Meeting of the IFMSA General Assembly held in Mandurah, Western Australian.

AMSA Subcommittees

AMSA Subcommittees are the extension of AMSA at the medical school level.

Subcommittees are chaired by the AMSA Rep. and are open to all medical students at each University.

The most important role of Subcommittees is to provide a direct and accessible link between the local medical student and AMSA, allowing individual students to contribute to the national body.

Through its Subcommittees, the Association is therefore able to collect and analyse the concerns and views of Australia’s 14,000 medical students.

Subcommittees also assist the AMSA Rep. in undertaking and implementing AMSA events and projects. Subcommittee members can undertake a number of roles depending on local conditions, including:

Attendance and participation in AMSA Councils as a proxy or observer;

  • Convention Delegation Organiser;
  • Blood Drive Co-ordinator;
  • Assistance in distribution of AMSA Publications;
  • Assistance in distribution of AMSA promotional material;
  • Distribution and collection of AMSA surveys;
  • Promoting AMSA sponsors;
  • And more!

AMSA Working Parties

From time to time, AMSA Council convenes Working Parties to examine particular aspects of Association policy, or to develop internal guidelines.

Working Parties usually consist of AMSA Representatives and members of the Executive, although other individuals are occasionally invited to contribute.

AMSA Secretariat

The AMSA Secretariat is based at:

42 Macquarie St.

Barton, ACT 2600

At present, AMSA employs a full-time Executive Officer, Shayne McArthur, to oversee AMSA corporate governance structures, statutory reporting requirements, financial operations and commercial contracts. The Executive Officer also fulfils a valuable role in research and policy development.
