AMSA is committed to improving the right to accessible healthcare for all genders. We work to achieve this through the production of gender health medical education resources and webinars, facilitating mentoring and networking for women, trans and gender diverse people, and engaging in public policy that pertains to gender.

AMSA holds gender equity as a core mandate and recognises the impact that power differentials, systemic inequities, discrimination and harassment have on health outcomes for women, trans and gender-diverse people. AMSA works with Universities, Medical School Societies, Local Health Districts, Medical Colleges, the AMA, the AMC, the MBA, and other key stakeholders to advocate for reform to medical culture and to address systemic barriers to the health and success of all genders in leadership and the workplace.

Leadership Mentoring Program

There are many exciting avenues for students to get involved in AMSA Gender Equity! One opportunity is our annual mentoring program for female, non-binary and gender-diverse students. This program was born out of frustration when looking at the lack of diversity and representation across most areas of medical leadership. Our goal is to connect you with like-minded peers so that you may learn and grow together in your leadership journeys. Every year the program has helped to connect more than 200 students.

Despite women representing now more than 50% of medical school graduates, there remains a great disparity in the field with fewer than 12.5% of female hospital chief executives and less than 33% of female state and federal medical officers. The Gender Equity movement hopes to create new pathways to resolve these inequities. By initiating dialogues and opportunities we aim to remove obstacles women face in the workforce and develop supportive structures to promote and encourage women into leadership roles.

We know that even without a fair playing field, women are still incredibly capable of achieving and accomplishing anything they want! Together we can move towards a world in which equal representation is the reality, and women in leadership are no longer the exception.

Gender Equity Book Club

If you’re looking for some new book recommendations, look no further than our Book Club! With a new book every month, together we will read about gender equity within the medical field, and beyond, both fiction and non-fiction books included. Each book will be posted on our social media pages, with a personal review at the end of every month, so read along with us and let us know what you learned from and loved about it, in the comments section of our monthly post!
